Welcome to My Lab.

I run my family photography business from our little house (me, my beautiful wife, and 4 kids—2 bedrooms).

My mission with this website and newsletter is to share everything I learn with you. For free. And I’m a compulsive learner so there is going to be a lot!

That means photography tips, personality traits, creativity, writing—everything.

To me, photography is a way to document things I never want to forget—my parents opening a gift from me, my baby’s first midwife checkup, enjoying a walk with my wife while the grandparents watch the kids.

But photography is also a way to explore—it gets me into places I’d never get to go otherwise. Not even the groom gets to see the bride before the ceremony, but I’m there when her mom does up her dress. I’m one of the first people to witness a first-time mom and dad playing with their newborn. I get to ask high school and college students what they’re going to do with the rest of their life as I snap their grad photo.

Everything I send to you—videos, tips, talks—were all written and recorded in the midst of chaos. 4 kids + wife and me ÷ 2 bedrooms. I live according to chaos theory.

Honestly, things got pretty dark a few years back. That’s why I want to share so much with you—everything from camera angles to personality traits to anxiety.

Life is an arena to be explored.

My camera and notebook get me in—and out of—strange places.

My philosophy is to give away everything I learned along the way.

Make sure you’re subscribed to get it all.

An Extra Thank You

A paid subscription to my lab newsletters is available if you wish to support me and my family.

It humbles me every time I’m notified of a new supporting subscriber. And, it makes me double down on how much I give away.

I’ve created a behind-the-scenes collection for supporting subscribers.

And Founding Subscribers get a video chat with me. We can talk about whatever you wish—photography, family, adventure, discouragement. Whatever comes to mind. I’ll even help you review your photos or portfolio if you like. I love this stuff!

Thanks for being here,

Mat
